June 2023 Reading Wrap Up

June 2023 Reading Wrap Up

June was an alright month for me rating-wise. I read 11 books, including 1 ARC, and a few re-reads! Have you read any of these? Let me know what you think!

Our Scorching Summer by Kels & Denise Stone

I really liked this one initially, but slowly lost interest in the main characters and their relationship 😬 I’m also not always a fan of characters who are writers, but that’s personal preference. I didn’t realize it was the second in a series until halfway in, so that may have contributed too? It was still fun with lots of spice!

Smoke Show by B. Perkins and Aimee Vance

This one was cute and easy to read. I loved the small magic town feel, and Blaze! I recently heard this described as “Halloweentown for adults” and I’d agree. It was fun with a few mysteries to solve.

1.5/5🌢 (open door but not overly explicit)

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

This was my first reread of ACOWAR and I think I enjoyed it more the second time! I listened to the Graphic Audio version and loved the cast. I love how much bigger the world feels in this book, but do have some issues with the end. My DMs are open on Instagram if you want to discuss lol.

Queen of Roses by Briar Boleyn

I really enjoyed Queen of Roses! It did take a while for me to get invested, but I love a quest trope. Draven was a broody, secretive bodyguard assassin πŸ‘ Morgan was a strong, resilient MC with a lot of room for growth. I honestly don’t know anything about Morgan Pendragon or much about Camelot lore, so it was all interesting to me.

Queen of Roses was slow burn for the main couple with a bit of side spice 1/5🌢 Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC!

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

Ah, the soap opera novella. I liked this one more on my re-read and doing the Graphic Audio this time helped! Though it is funny to see both my dislike of Feyre and my love of Cassian go up as the series progresses πŸ˜‚ Overall I’m really enjoying my reread of this series! (My favorite part is the snowball fight.)

Broody Devil by Melissa Ivers

After a while, all of the “marry a demon/king/fae/prince” books start to run together, BUT this was pretty good! It’s enemies to lovers with lots of tension and a 4/5🌢 rating for me. If you like KU romance, you may enjoy this one.

Until I get You by Claire Contreras

If I’m being honest, I probably shouldn’t have picked this one up. I had heard it was dark hockey romance, and my library’s Hoopla had the audio available, but dark romance + an audiobook was setting me up to not love it lol. That being said, it was alright just not for me. The plot was outrageous, the guys were possessive and problematic. Super spicy though! Also not enough hockey.

2/5

Weak Side by S.J. Sylvis

I loved this! The drama with the FMC’s mom wasn’t my fav, but the romance was so fun. I’m not usually a huge fan of college hockey, but the roommate trope was so gooood. You may like this if you enjoy the quirks and drama of hockey romance.

Holes by Louis Sachar

I feel a little weird adding this book to a blog called The Spicy Book Blog, but here we are! I decided to try the audiobook for this one and had a lot of fun. It was very similar to the movie, and of course very middle grade!

Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood

I’ve read a few of these now, and this one has my favorite cover! I love the Milo Thatch/ Dimitri vibes πŸ˜‚ However, his book was just okay for me. (I know, I’m sorry! So many people love it!!) The writing style wasn’t my favorite. Lots of random quirky metaphors and pop culture. Also a lot of science, which isn’t bad, but I found myself skimming those parts.

I did like a lot of the characters, but I never LOVED them 🌢🌢 / 5

Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent

Daughter of No Worlds was my favorite book of June! I feels a lot like Throne of Glass, but also it’s own thing. I LOVED the main characters and dual POV. The romance is definitely a slowburn and maybe a 🌢 / 5 based on what I remember. A great start to a high fantasy series!
