The Shepherd King Duology: Review

The Shepherd King Duology

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure the kingdom of the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King’s own nephew, Captain of the Destriers…and guilty of high treason.

He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cardsβ€”the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

One Dark Window

One Dark Window Review

I added One Dark Window to my TBR in 2022 when it started buzzing on Bookstagram, but I was a little nervous to read it. I had heard the romance wasn’t very prominent and that’s just the mood I was in at the time! I decided to wait until book 2 came out, but ended up getting an ARC for Two Twisted Crowns. This pushed me to read them both, and wow!! I LOVED THEM.

I describe One Dark Window as a highwayman retelling with Yu-Gi-Oh! card magic lol. The magic was so unique and felt a little like tarot cards in a way. I loved that they each had their own powers!

One of my favorite aspects of this book was the characters. The found family was so great! My favorite character was probably Elm – he was so funny to me.

The romance was definitely a subplot, but there were still swoony moments. I’d even give this a 1/5 🌢️ for 1 short, vague scene. Usually I’m “give me all the spice!!!” but I was really wrapped up in the story and didn’t mind.

Two Twisted Crowns

Two Twisted Crowns Review

WOW!! All the stars.Β I can’t recommend this duology enough. I loved Two Twisted Crowns even more than One Dark Window. Elm being my favorite character really worked out for me since he was such a focus in this book. I loved him and Ione, their relationship was so fun.Β I’d give this one a 1/5 🌢 as well, and when I tell you I squeeeeealed at this book!!

There’s a lot less of Ravyn and Elspeth together in this book, but I liked seeing more of the Shepherd King and learning about his life. He had such an interesting relationship with Elspeth, and the ending was very satisfying.

This is probably my favorite duology I’ve ever read. It’s fantasy, it’s romance, it’s dark, it’s fun, the pacing was great. Totally recommend!

Be wary. Be clever. Be good.
